Collecting Performance Data

PDH functions work with queries and counters. A query is a set of performance counters that are grouped together so that you can collect their data at the same time. A counter is a performance data item stored in the Windows NT Performance Registry. You can call the PdhBrowseCountersY59M13 function to display the following PDH dialog box, which lets you browse the available counters.

For more information on counters, see Performance Objects and Counters4JI5.P..

A query can contain one or more counters, and a counter can be contained in more than one query. To use PDH, you must create queries and add counters to them, as shown in the following sections.
